An Absolute Icon of the Swinging Sixties, and an undisputed world class collector car today....the legendary Mk1 Cortina Lotus!
According to part of the all important extensive historic documentation accompanying this genuine survivor, This stunning Lotus Cortina was purchased brand new by a Mr James Shattuck of Long Beach California on the 7th of March 1967, from Plaza Ford of Bell Flower California, and stayed in his ownership for many decades, surprisingly there is no history of this car having ever been used for any competition work of any kind, but there are extensive receipts for work completed dating right back to 1967.
As with a lot of these now highly desirable world market collector cars, they originally built far less than remain today....so original documentation and original paint all play an important part in being able to determine that what you are looking at is actually what you are paying for...authenticity is everything with these cars, and to that end this old survivor has never actually been restored, which certainly helps determine what you are dealing with, it has had repaint at some point in the past, however retains its original paint in the engine bay and more importantly in the now well aged boot areas, where the tell tale signs of a genuine Lotus body are harder to replicate...the chassis rails in the engine bay are in amazing condition, as are the inner guards, with the original tags undisturbed, and matching the documentation.
The solid body on this example presents well, and although there are signs of minor damage acquired over the years of daily use, there is nothing of a major nature, and certainly nothing that would give rise to concerns of a previous re-shell.
The paint is quite presentable, and although obviously an older refurbishment with a few chips and marks, it still presents well over all.
The heart of the Lotus, the almighty Twin Cam engine has recently had a rebuild at the hands of its second NZ owner and is a joy to behold, the refurbished gearbox shifts nicely too, and the package performs with a period correct appeal that few cars of the age can ever hope to match, while the sound of the induction alone will put a big smile on your face!
Correct date coded 881a Lotus wheels have been refurbished with decent modern rubber, and add to the character of this remarkable old survivor.
The interior is largely original and in good condition for a survivor car, still presenting well after 55 years of service.
For the purist , The sale of this Lotus will include the correct servo unit for the car, an original air box and trumpets, the original wood rim steering wheel, the original hand book (not a repro) and the original dealer service policy from 1967.
Any inspection by a genuine purchaser welcome, this car is a true survivor car, it is certainly not concourse but it is clean and tidy, and is more importantly a rare surviving Lotus.
