This magnificent 56 has just been reluctantly released from very long term ownership due to its doting owner sadly being no longer able to drive her....
Originally purchased in the early eighties as a very solid old survivor having spent the majority of its life in the dry and warm Nelson area, it was painstakingly and beautifully restored to an exceptional standard over the next eight or so years, and was finally completed in 1991, with only very limited mileage since, usually seeing service as a wedding car, and the odd Sunday drive.
Starting back then with a car that would probably be considered too original and honest to restore today, this Bel Air had the body completely dismantled and removed from the chassis, and every component was completely rebuilt, inside and out, no reproduction parts were used in the extensive restoration, with the complete and sympathetic restoration using either perfect second hand or fully reconditioned parts, in fact the best parts of no less than three good cars went into this restoration , and blatantly evident throughout the entire car is the absolute dedication and passion that went into the build.
The interior is perfect, and displays beautifully, in totally authentic original condition, with only minor concessions made for the sake of safety, the glass and all trim and bright work is immaculate, and the exceptional attention to detail extends throughout the engine bay, door shuts, and into the trunk area, which retains an original mat, spare wheel, and jack.
The smooth old 265 ci engine still resides in the detailed period correct engine bay, and is coupled to an equally smooth 3 speed manual trans, which still gives an impressive performance even today, with plenty of torque, minimal fuss and period style.
This is without a doubt one of the best restored examples of this model we have ever had the pleasure of offering for sale, it simply has to be seen to be fully appreciated, the quality and calibre of a restoration to this standard would cost well in excess of twice the asking price of this example today, so there is real value here for the next caretaker of this iconic piece of New Zealand's mid century motoring history.
This magnificent Chevrolet comes with its original ownership papers, showing the Nelson Freezing Works as the first owners, and a complete photographic history file of the entire restoration process, although now an older restoration this example still presents exceptionally well, with only minor wear and the odd small paint imperfection, over all it is a stunning example of what is now one of the most desirable and iconic cars of our time, and it still turns heads and draws comment where ever it goes, just like it did nearly sixty years ago!
