These cool old Right Hand Drive NZ new Bel Airs where once everywhere, but sadly not many of the old Kiwi 63s have survived to tell the tale today..
Most of these cars got driven into the ground early on as they were favoured for their large cabin size and towing capabilities and general ruggedness, with many being worked to death by farmers and shearing crews on shingle roads all over the country, with the odd one that did manage to survive only to finish its days in a demo derby! with the remainder getting a pretty hard time when they were less than worthless..
Luckily this old girl has clearly had a slightly different life than that actually a far better car than it appears to be from the outside, this honest old 63 has a very good body for one of these, and although the trim and brightwork is showing its age as would be expected for an unrestored 62 year old car, this is still a very honest solid example.
The interior really tells the story of the decades this old girl has enjoyed while traveling around, it is very original and even retains its original seating and carpets, all be it very well loved, and it even still has its original unbroken horn ring which is very rare.. but it literally looks and feels as comfortable as your favourite pair of well-worn old jeans inside this old Chevy!
The 283 Small block V8 and Powerglide where almost indestructible in these old tanks, and this one is no exception literally running like a Swiss watch.
This 63 is unbelievably good to drive, it is so smooth and cruisy and simply delightful you just want to drive it any chance you get!
The trusty old 283 has more than enough power to carry its large mass around and you can hardly feel the power glide change gears, no diff noise, no banging and crashing, put it this way we have dealt with a lot of very high dollar fully restored classic cars over the years that wouldnt come close to driving as well as this old darling does!
If youre after a shiny and mint show stopper then this certainly isnt it, but if you understand the value of an unmolested cruiser thats never been pulled apart and butchered and drives accordingly, then you have probably just found it.
A great blank canvas for a nice sympathetic cosmetic resto, as you can see exactly what youre getting, or just leave her alone and enjoy it as the last owner of 20+ years has.
Very hard to find one of these neat old cars still running the good old 283 and Glide, and even harder to find one that doesnt have mums flower pots hanging out the bonnet, while its dragging itself around on airbags riding like it looks..
A very cool old survivor, she certainly wont win you a prize at your local car show, but you will get you there and back with your elbow out the window and a big smile on your face..
