Pontiac basically started the Muscle Car wars of the Sixties with the GTO, and ended it with the Trans Am.
When every other manufacturer was strangled by the fuel crisis producing asthmatic small blocks, V6s, and pathetic four cylinder engines, Pontiac was still producing the mighty 455 ci 7 litre Big Block V8, and this car completely represents the end of that iconic era, with its iconic graphics and bold appearance.
1976 was the last year for the true Big Block engined Pontiac Muscle Cars, and as such this car holds a very special place in the history of the Muscle Car.
This particular Trans Am is a absolute time capsule, it is completely unmolested and very original throughout, it was purchased at a collector car auction in the US a few years ago and imported to NZ documented as displaying an original 14,600 miles, and is now showing only a meagre 18,800 miles, whatever the actual mileage, its lived an exceptionally sheltered existence and the fact remains that this car is quite simply one out of the box, it still drives like a new car, and still smells new inside, the interior indicates a very low mileage, and very little use too, having all of its original fittings and fixtures present and correct, and showing no signs of wear, or ever having had and work carried out, or anything replaced.
The driving experience behind the wheel of this gorgeous old T/A immediately reminds you why these cars were so popular throughout the seventies, this example drives magnificently, even by today's standards, it's so smooth and quiet you find yourself turning the factory radio down, and blipping the throttle at the lights just to make sure you haven't stalled it!
The body on this T/A is in remarkable order, the usual rust prone areas are all original and un touched, and most of the paintwork appears original, the trim and bright work is all original and very nice, and the inside of the trunk still has the correct original finish, boot mat, and space saver spare, and correct jack.
The engine bay houses the correct WX code 455 4 barrel, which is original to the car, and is again complete and correct throughout. The engine bay has been protected with a rust treatment program which has maintained it throughout the years, and no one has ever played around with anything under the hood giving the engine bay a correct period appearance.
Optioned up from new with its original Dealer invoice build sheet as proof, this T/A got tinted power glass, tilt/tele column, Deluxe interior seating, a factory 8 track, AM FM stereo, a rear demister, and a Hurst Shifted 4 speed! all big news in 76!
Original Rally II wheels with period tires and an original ride height all add to the complete charm of this example, and with values of these early Big Block Pontiacs now on the "Ones to Watch list " not only will this example be an absolute pleasure to own, it should also be a very rewarding future investment.....
